Postdoctoral Research Associate Position in Remote Sensing and Space Sciences at the University of Illinois Urbana­ Champaign

We are seeking an outstanding postdoctoral researcher to join our airglow and remote sensing and space sciences group in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in The Grainger College of Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work on the NSF-funded Midlatitude-Allsky-imaging Network for GeoSpace Observations (MANGO) project (https://mangonetwork.org), a cutting-edge distributed network of ground-based optical remote sensing instruments studying the Earth’s upper atmosphere.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct independent scientific research and publish findings in peer-reviewed journals
  • Develop and optimize algorithms for processing optical imaging and interferometry data
  • Contribute to the operation and maintenance of MANGO’s distributed instrument network as well as other instruments operated by our group   
  • Mentor undergraduate students and contribute to the project’s educational mission
  • Collaborate with multi-institutional partners within the MANGO network

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Physics, Atmospheric Sciences, or closely related field (obtained within the last 10 years)
  • Strong programming skills in Python with demonstrated experience in image processing
  • Experience with scientific data analysis and interpretation of space weather datasets
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Track record of peer-reviewed publications
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in mesospheric and thermospheric physics, including:
    • Thermospheric dynamics
    • Atmospheric gravity waves
    • Atmospheric coupling processes
    • Traveling ionospheric disturbances
  • Experience with remote sensing instrumentation, especially wide-angle imaging systems and optical interferometers
  • Prior experience mentoring students
  • Familiarity with high-performance computing environments, database management, and version control systems (e.g., Git)
  • Experience with data visualization tools and techniques

The Postdoctoral Research Associate is a full-time, benefits-eligible position appointed on a 12-month service basis.  The initial appointment is for one year with the possibility of extension based on performance and funding.  The anticipated start date is as soon as possible but negotiable.  Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
